Narrow linewidth lasers can play an important role in military applications, including sensing and perimeter security.

The emergence of coherent Doppler LIDAR for military sensing applications has created opportunities for new laser platforms, including narrow linewidth laser systems based on the RIO Planex platform.  These systems can be used to measure wind velocity, protect from microbursts and wind shear, allow helicopter landing in sand and dust clouds, and to detect chemical and biological weapons that have been released in an aerosol form.

Acoustic fiber optic sensing using narrowband lasers can provide perimeter security in military installations, harbors and other high value locations such as labs, homeland security, energy generation facilities and more.  Passive, distributed sensors, used with narrow linewidth lasers, enable systems capable of precise detection in real time, and with multiple targets.
